Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (geboren 1825 in Zürich, gestorben 1898 in Kirchberg bei Zürich) repräsentiert neben Gottfried Keller einen der bedeutendsten Vertreter des »Literarischen Realismus« aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein literarisches Interesse gilt vorzugsweise der historischen Novelle wie "Die Richterin" (1885), die ein rechtshistorisch kompliziertes Selbstjustizdrama aus der Karolingischen Zeit mit einer fast missglückten Liebesleidenschaft mit literarisch facettenreicher Erzählkunst verbindet - "Ich ziehe sie dem Zeitroman vor, weil sie mich besser maskiert. [...] Auf diese Art und Weise bin ich mittels einer sehr objektiven und außerordentlichen künstlerischen Form vollkommen subjektiv und individuell." Aus dieser "maskierten" Subjektivität lässt sich Meyers Nähe zum 'Symbolismus' herleiten, der an die Epochenschwelle der europäischen 'Literatur der Moderne' grenzt.
