Unter den großen deutschen Historikern des 19. Jahrhunderts war Ferdinand Gregorovius (1821 1891) ein Außenseiter. Aus Ostpreußen stammend, verbrachte er den größten Teil seines Lebens in Italien, das er eingehend bereiste und in dem fünfbändigen Werk "Wanderjahre in Italien" umfassend beschrieb. Ursprünglich für den ersten Band der "Wanderungen" geschrieben, ist "Die Insel Capri" eine unterhaltsame Mischung aus Reisebeschreibung, historischem Abriss und Beschwörung der antiken Vergangenheit, von Gregorovius selbst als eine "Idylle vom Mittelmeer" bezeichnet. Mit dem Buch "Korfu Eine ionische Idylle" hat der Autor ein griechisches Gegenstück zu seinem Capri-Buch verfasst.§Nachdruck der in Leipzig erschienenen dritten Auflage von 1897.
