Kaum ein Erbe des alten Israel ist bis heute von so selbstverständlicher, die Zeit und das gesellschaftliche Leben strukturierender Bedeutung wie der wöchentliche Ruhetag, der nicht zuletzt auf den jüdischen Sabbat zurückgeht. Alexandra Grund untersucht in der vorliegenden Studie Ursprung und Bedeutung des Sabbats. Dabei geht sie zunächst seiner etwaigen Herkunft aus dem mesopotamischen Vollmondtag sab/pattu nach, untersucht die Sabbatkonzeption beider Versionen des Dekalogs und zeigt die Grundlinien der prägenden priesterlichen Sabbattheologie auf, die im Erzählbogen von der Schöpfung bis zur Sinaioffenbarung entfaltet wird. Zugleich arbeitet sie anhand der Genese des Sabbats Charakteristika von Israels Zeitverständnis im Kontext seiner Umweltkulturen und die Bedeutung dieses Ruhetages für die Erinnerungskultur des Volkes Israel heraus.
