Der deutsche Geograph, Forschungsreisende und Verleger Hans Meyer (1858-1929) entstammte der berühmten Lexikonverlegerfamilie§Meyer. Nach dem Studium der Germanistik, Geschichte, Staatswissenschaften, Völkerkunde und Botanik arbeitete er zunächst im Verlagshaus §seines Vaters. Im Verlauf seins Lebens unternahm Meyer - finanziert aus dem Familienvermögen - zahlreiche Forschungsreisen nach Ostasien,§Nord- und Südamerika und Ostafrika. Berühmt geworden ist er als einer der Erstbesteiger des Kilimandscharo, den er allerdings erst im §dritten Anlauf (1889) bezwingen konnte. Meyer hat neben seinen Forschungs- und Reise-Aufzeichnungen zahlreiche populärwissenschaftliche §Titel verfasst, die sich großer Beliebtheit erfreuten.
