Die Amsel ist Musil in nuce, eines seiner persönlichsten Werke und ein Schlüsseltext der Moderne. Auf wenigen Seiten berichtet er von einer Begegnung zweier Jugendfreunde und davon, wie einer dem anderen erzählt, warum alles anders gekommen ist: von einem nächtlichen Erweckungserlebnis, dem Ausbruch aus der Enge des Lebens, seiner Erfüllung in Todesnähe und der Rückkehr in die eigene Kindheit nach dem Verlust der Mutter. Über drei Jahre hat Musil daran gearbeitet, bevor die Erzählung 1928 in einer Zeitschrift erschien. Er hat sie Jahre später in seinen legendären Nachlass zu Lebzeiten aufgenommen.
