Dans ce livre est défendu l'idée selon laquelle il existerait des figures sonores dans la segmentation et la perception auditive. De plus, comme la perception auditive mobilise des connaissances pour structurer les éléments perçus, et que les connaissances de l'expert ne sont pas celles du novice, cet ouvrage explore également l'influence de l'expertise ŕ travers différentes expériences. Cinq expériences y sont ainsi présentées, qui font appel aux méthodes de la psychologie cognitive (tâche de segmentation et de catégorisation) et ŕ celles des neurosciences cognitives (méthode des Potentiels Evoqués). Les résultats sont discutés entre autres en termes d'apprentissage implicite, qui permettrait ŕ l'individu, indépendamment de toute expertise musicale, d'intérioriser des formes sonores.
