Magisterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,0, Universität Hamburg (Geisteswissenschaften, Anglistik und Amerikanistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung:§Das Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit hat eine geistesgeschichtliche Tradition, die sich auf zweieinhalb Jahrtausende beläuft. Die auf den ersten Blick einfach erscheinende antithetische Gegenüberstellung von vita activa und vita contemplativa umfasst eine Vielzahl grundsätzlicher Fragen sowohl ethischer als auch politischer Art. Denn das Begriffspaar, verstanden als qualitative Unterscheidung zwischen einander ausschließenden und sich doch komplementär ergänzenden Lebensentwürfen, beinhaltet weitere begriffliche Dualismen, so etwa die Gegenüberstellung von Einsamkeit und Gesellschaft, von Arbeit und Muße, von Denken und Handeln und von Theorie und Praxis. Insofern bildet der stilisierte Dualismus vita activa / vita contemplativa ein wesentliches Modell zur Erfassung menschlichen Daseins, das ein Thema von zeitloser Relevanz ist.§Francesco Petrarcas Schrift De vita solitaria (1346 1356) kann als erstes humanistisches Prosatraktat zum Problem vita activa / vita contemplativa gelten. Als erstes Werk der Renaissance spiegelt es die Legitimierungsprobleme der humanistischen Lebensweise wider. Dabei kann Petrarca (1304 1374) als Vorreiter der neuen frei schwebenden Intellektuellen gelten, wie sie in Europa in den kommenden Jahrzehnten vermehrt in Erscheinung treten sollten.§Thomas Morus (1478 1535) und seine Zeitgenossen stehen zwar nicht mehr unter einem derartigen Legitimierungszwang, denn die humanistische Lebensweise hat sich im Europa des frühen 16. Jahrhunderts etabliert und bildet nicht mehr die Ausnahme. Dennoch verliert die Diskussion um vita activa und vita contemplativa keinesfalls an Relevanz; im Gegenteil, die Beziehung zwischen Theorie und Praxis und die Frage, welcher der beiden der Vorrang zukommt, beschäftigt die Humanisten sehr, und für viele manifestiert sich der Dualismus in der Differenz zwischen humanistischer Theorie und politischer Praxis. Ein Standardthema der humanistischen Literatur bildet dabei die Fragestellung, ob die neue Bildungselite ihre Gelehrsamkeit in den Dienst eines Fürsten stellen sollte. Genau diese Frage behandelt auch Thomas Morus im ersten Buch seiner Utopia (1516). Von besonderem Interesse ist sein Beitrag deshalb, weil es ihm gelingt, das tradierte Problem vita activa / vita contemplativa differenziert und in seiner ganzen Bandbreite zu diskutieren, ohne je in eine gemeinplätzliche Behandlung des Themas zu verfallen. Den Konflikt zwischen politischer Aktion und gelehrter Kontemplation dramatisiert Morus dabei anhand der Morus-Persona und der Figur Raphael Hythlodaeus.§Die in der europäischen Renaissance eifrig geführte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema reflektiert zunächst das homozentrische Weltbild der Humanisten. Das binäre Modell entwickelt sich in der Renaissance zu einer exklusiven und von gegenseitigem Unverständnis geprägten Opposition. Dabei wird, an tradierte Denkmuster anknüpfend, die vita contemplativa vielfach als müßig und nutzlos stigmatisiert, während umgekehrt die vita activa als unrein, profan und eitel gebrandmarkt wird. Ausgehend von der Hypothese, dass Morus im ersten Buch der Utopia den zeitlosen Widerstreit zwischen vita activa und vita contemplativa problematisiert, ergibt sich die zentrale Fragestellung der vorliegenden Arbeit: Zu welchem Schluss gelangt Morus mit seinem Dialogue of Counsel hinsichtlich der Frage, ob und warum Philosophen in den Staatsdienst treten bzw. aus welchen Gründen sie dies unterlassen sollten? Zu welchem Ergebnis kommt Morus in der Behandlung des Problems vita activa / vita contemplativa; welche Lebensform wird als höherwertig dargestellt und mit welcher Begründung erfolgt dies? Von besonderem Interesse ist hierbei auch, welches Bild vom Philosophen mit dem ersten B...
