Der deutsch-jüdische Philosoph, Schriftsteller und politische Publizist Theodor Lessing (1872-1933) stammte aus Hannover und studierte zunächst Medizin, dann Philosophie, Literatur und Psychologie. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg entfaltetet er eine umfassende publizistische Tätigkeit. Sein 1925 veröffentlichtes Buch über Hindenburg brachte ihm den Hass antisemitischer und rechtsradikaler Kreise ein, die schließlich zu seiner Entfernung aus dem universitären Lehrbetrieb führte. Die Kampfschrift "Der Lärm" gegen die umfassende Verlärmung der modernen Industriegesellschaft veröffentlichte er 1908. Lessing emigrierte 1933 und fiel im gleichen Jahr in Marienbad einem nationalsozialistischen Mordanschlag zum Opfer.
