Sie las - und schrieb - als eine Außenseiterin, eine Frau, die in der Bibliothek ihres Vaters in die Lehre ging, da ihr das Privileg einer akademischen Ausbildung, wie sie ihren Brüdern zuteil wurde, verwehrt worden war - und sie las ohne jede festgelegte Vorstellung von dem, wie sich der Kanon der englischen Literatur zusammensetzte.
