Darin schildert der Autor, wie der erst 16-jährige Etzel Andergast in Konkurrenz zu seinem Vater, einem Staatsanwealt, einen schwerwiegenden, Jahrzehnte zurückliegenden Justizirrtum aufdeckt. Andergast ist auch eine der Hauptfiguren in Wassermanns Roman "Etzel Andergast" (1931); der zusammen mit dem "Fall Maurizius" und dem erst nach Wassermanns Tod erschienen Roman "Joseph Kerkhovens dritte Existenz" eine Trilogie über das bürgerliche Leben der Zeit vor und nach dem 1. Weltkrieg bildet.
