Der französische Journalist Henri Barbusse (1873 1935) meldete sich bei Kriegsausbruch 1914 freiwillig zur Armee und war bis 1916 immer wieder an der Front eingesetzt. Der im gleichen Jahr veröffentlichte, sofort zum Bestseller gewordene Roman "Das Feuer" schildert als eines der ersten Bücher überhaupt die entfesselte Brutalität des modernen Krieges mit seinen Materialschlachten und ungeheuren Opferzahlen. Barbusse inspirierte mit seinem "Tagebuch einer Korporalschaft", so der Untertitel, nachhaltig die pazifistische Bewegung in Europa und war nicht zuletzt ein wesentlicher Einfluss für Erich-Maria Remarques "Im Westen nichts Neues".
