Der französische Maler und Schriftsteller Albert Gleizes gilt als wichtiger Vertreter des Kubismus und bezeichnete sich zeit seines Lebens als Begründer dieser Kunstströmung. Obwohl er nie offizielles Mitglied des Bauhauses gewesen ist, widmete Gleizes der Kunstschule dennoch seinen einflussreichen Essay über den Kubismus. 1928 nahmen die Herausgeber László Moholy-Nagy und Walter Gropius den Essay als Band 13 in die Bauhausbücher-Reihe auf. Neben eigenen Werken zeigt Albert Gleizes auch Kunst von Georges Braque, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger und Pablo Picasso als Referenzbeispiele und setzt das Bauhaus wie auch seine Buchreihe in einen internationalen Kontext, der die Wechselwirkung der zahlreichen Kunstströmungen jener Zeit auf eindrucksvolle Wiese einfängt.
