Crewkerne, an attractive country town in the county of Somerset, has a rich and varied history. The earliest historical record of the town is from the time of the Saxons, and it is thought that the town was held as a royal manor with a mint. The town would later prosper on the back of the textile industry during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with specialisation in areas such as webbing and sailcloth. The importance and prosperity of Crewkerne over the centuries is encapsulated in its magnificent church, St Bartholomew's. Today, the population of the town is close to 7,000 people.
