Jean Paulhan qui venait, en 1925, d'en être nommé le rédacteur en chef, maintint et renforça le lien avec l'écrivain catholique, créé par Jacques Rivière. Mais il ne se priva pas de lui faire sentir que La NRF ne serait jamais, pour lui, un lieu sûr et acquis… Leur résistance commune du temps de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Malgré des goûts littéraires divergents, des convictions politiques et religieuses souvent opposées, leur conversation resta, jusqu'en dans les années 60, celle de deux "esprits libres et cœurs sensibles".
