Camillo Berneri, né en 1897, socialiste, devient anarchiste, puis, naturellement antifasciste. Rosselli, né en 1899, démocrate, devient socialiste libéral en développant son regard critique sur les partis traditionnels. Il devient lui aussi antifasciste. Tous deux contraints à l'exil, ils se rencontrent en un combat commun. Ces deux esprits ouverts échangent une correspondance où, outre l'antifascisme tant en Italie qu'en Espagne, ils trouvent un terrain d'entente : la critique de l'État (fasciste, démocratique ou stalinien). Ils meurent assassinés, en 1937, l'un en France, par les fascistes, l'autre, en Espagne, par les staliniens.
