John Constable (East Bergholt 1776 - Londra 1837) fu uno dei pittori inglesi più attivi nella pittura di paesaggio. Non si mosse mai dalla campagna del Suffolk dove viveva: qui aveva a disposizione tutto quanto gli occorreva per dedicarsi completamente a questo genere pittorico. L'accesso alla Royal Academy gli consentì poi di allargare le sue fonti di ispirazione alla tradizione del passato, soprattutto francese e olandese. La natura non è però per Constable esclusivamente espressione di un'esperienza emotiva, come dimostra, ad esempio, la raffigurazione pressoché scientifica delle nuvole nei suoi paesaggi.
