Staphylococcus aureus es considerada una bacteria potencialmente patógena para el humano a nivel mundial, causante de diversas infecciones, debido a que posee varios mecanismos de virulencia. A pocos años de la inclusión de la penicilina como tratamiento se observó que aproximadamente 60% de los aislamientos presentaron resistencia a la misma. Posteriormente con la inserción en la industria farmacológica de la meticilina, se plantea una nueva alternativa, hasta que dos años después de su uso se detecta la primera cepa de S.aureus resistente a este agente antimicrobiano denominándose a estas cepas Staphylococcus aureus resistente a meticilina (SARM). Esta resistencia es conferida por una mutación en el gen mecA, que codifica una proteína ligadora de penicilina adicional conocida como PBP2a que no tiene afinidad por los antibióticos beta-lactámicos excepto ceftarolina y ceftobiprole. Ceftaroline es una cefalosporina de cuarta generación, bactericida, la cual tiene alta afinidad por las PBP2a por lo que mantiene potente actividad in vitro contra SARM, siendo una opción terapéutica, sobre todo cuando se presenta resistencia a otros antimicrobianos.
