September 17, 2024. At half past three in the afternoon, thousands of pagers began to explode across Lebanon. The next day, it was the radios. In forty-eight hours, equipment that Hezbollah had bought to protect its people from Israeli surveillance had wounded more than three thousand of them, along with the relatives, shopkeepers and children who happened to be standing nearby.

How did an organization that had spent four decades fighting Israeli intelligence accept the weapon into its own ranks?

Case File: The Pager Operation follows the trail from a pager brand in New Taipei to a consultancy in Budapest, a company registered in Sofia and a seller that existed mostly online. It reconstructs how the devices were designed to look ordinary, how they were sold through a trusted contact, why Hezbollah's inspections failed, and who in Israel argued over when to use them.

Drawing on investigations by Reuters, the Associated Press, The Washington Post, The New York Times and CBS, on official statements and on the testimony of doctors and survivors, the book examines:

- The shell companies and the false commercial trail that misled investigators in four countries
- The device itself, and why its bulk was explained away in advance
- The decision to activate, and the dispute between Netanyahu, Gallant and Mossad chief David Barnea
- Two days inside Lebanese hospitals, and the survivors still in treatment years later
- The killing of Hassan Nasrallah ten days later, and what the pagers did and did not have to do with it
- The legal case, the strategic balance and the lessons for every organization that buys its equipment through intermediaries

Clear about what is documented and what remains disputed, this is the story of one of the most audacious intelligence operations of the century, and of the people who paid for it.

Part of the Shadow Intelligence Series.
