Größter Konkurrent von Weltbild ist die Kette Thalia, die in diesem Jahr die 44 Filialen von Buch & Kunst übernommen hat. Aufgrund der Expansion der Großfilialisten droht immer mehr kleineren und mittleren Buchhandlungen das Aus. 2006 ist der gesamte deutsche Büchermarkt mit 1,1 Prozent nur leicht gewachsen. Bei den Hörbüchern und im Online-Buchhandel schwächt sich der Höhenflug langsam ab.
