Publicada en 1906 e inspirada en su propia experiencia, Botchan fue la novela más popular de Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) en parte gracias a la sencillez de su planteamiento: las aventuras de un orgulloso joven de Tokio que es destinado como profesor a una escuela provinciana en la agreste isla de Shikoku. De forma parecida a como sucede en su novela Soy un gato, publicada también en esta colección, en la que es la mirada del felino la que disecciona con acidez la sociedad en mitad de la cual le ha tocado vivir, Soseki se sirve de situaciones jocosas que en ocasiones rayan el absurdo para pintar un entorno social en el que los valores tradicionales que habían fundamentado la cultura nipona -el honor, la equidad, la justicia- estaban siendo sustituidos por otros basados en el éxito personal, la superficialidad y la avaricia.
