La estomatitis subprotésica (ESP) es una patología infecciosa-inflamatoria considerada como un problema de salud pública pues su origen multifactorial es la mayor de sus complicaciones, dado que demanda un minucioso interrogatorio y una constante e ineludible valoración del paciente edéntulo portador de prótesis total. En la estomatitis la homeostasis bucal se rompe, y su tratamiento impone una problemática que trasciende los procesos bucales, abarcando factores de orden genético con manifestación individual, situaciones que requieren repensar el tratamiento para garantizar su eficacia limitando su recidiva. Afortunadamente, el estudio de nuevos biomateriales de origen natural se dibujan como un aliciente alternativa para resolver dichas realidades, entre ellos el Quitosano, biopolímero derivado de la quitina con propiedades bioestimulantes y antimicrobianas, inhibiendo de la adhesión de Candida albicans (principal actor de la estomatitis) a las bases de las prótesis totales. Considerar su uso bajo la forma de biogel tiene potencial utilidad en pacientes con ESP, usándose como agregado de materiales acondicionadores de tejidos.
