Née à New York en 1928, Bettina Grossman – " Bettina " pour le monde de l'art – a vécu dix ans à Paris dans les années 1950 avant de revenir dans sa ville natale, alors capitale mondiale des avant-gardes artistiques. Résidante du Chelsea Hotel depuis 1968, elle est une figure reconnue de ses pairs, notamment des peintres Robert Motherwell et Ellsworth Kelly, membres éminents de l'expressionisme abstrait et du minimalisme.En 2019, la photographe Yto Barrada expose avec elle son travail au LMCC's, à New York, s'ensuit la redécouverte de son oeuvre. Durant trois années, Yto plonge dans les archives de Bettina, puis imagine un livre qui remet au jour une oeuvre majeure produit par une femme artiste iconique. Cet ouvrage a reçu le Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles 2020.
