Víctor Lorin returns to New Orleans with Caroline, his wife, and their two young children to reclaim the mansion where he grew up.
A rational man and a Catholic, Víctor rejects superstition...
until his children begin to die.

Désirée, his father's widow, has fallen into destitution and unjustly blames Víctor for everything she has lost. She turns to Nephertaríe, the feared Queen of New Orleans, a Vodou witch whose power defies both the gods and death itself.
As the hurricane approaches, Víctor watches his children and wife succumb to a sudden illness with violent, inexplicable symptoms.
The doctors have no explanation. No cure.
A Catholic exorcism fails.
Víctor is forced to seek help from the very thing he has always dismissed as superstition.

The hurricane breaks loose. Víctor crosses the boundaries of reason and his own faith. He entrusts his life and soul to a mysterious babalawo to enter the only place where he can save his family:

the border between life and death.
