Im einzelnen versucht die Arbeit, in der Konkretisierung des Projektes der Aufklärung für die technische Entwicklung ein Konzept anwendungsorientierter Ethik zu erläutern. Eine Beschränkung auf die normative Grundsatzebene wird ebenso kritisiert wie der neue Naturalismus, der nicht zuletzt in Hans Jonas' Prinzip Verantwortung vertreten wird. Indem Überlegungen zu den Steuerungsproblemen moderner, funktional differenzierter Gesellschaften Berücksichtigung finden, soll die gesellschaftstheoretische Sterilität der gegenwärtigen Ethikdiskussion vermieden werden. Durch Erörterungen zur Institutionalisierung der Technikbewertung zielt die Arbeit auf Möglichkeiten einer indirekten Steuerung, die die Frontstellung nach dem Motto >Die Wirtschaft entwickelt, der Staat verbietet< möglichst schon im Ansatz vermeidet.
