En 1923 Albert Londres s'intéresse au bagne de Cayenne, en Guyane française. Il vient d'entrer au Petit Parisien , journal prestigieux dont il admire le rédacteur en chef Élie-Joseph Bois.

Londres est lui-même un reporter déjà célèbre. Les premières déportations vers le bagne datent des lendemains de la Révolution. La publication de l'enquête explosive d'Albert Londres (août et septembre 1923) dans Le Petit Parisien – enquête qui s'achève par une lettre ouverte à Albert Sarraut, ministre des Colonies – connaît un retentissement considérable, et sa force sera si grande qu'en septembre 1924 le gouvernement décidera la suppression du bagne.
