This textbook aims to introduce radiographers to the basic principles and terminology of AI. It also presents and discusses practical examples of AI application in radiography practice across different imaging modalities and specialisations and comments on advantages and challenges in each of these fields.

With the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into everyday clinical practice, the role of the radiographer is rapidly changing across the world, with new knowledge, skills and competencies emerging. It is a key tool that is already revolutionising healthcare and, more so, medical imaging. Understanding all aspects of AI, both technical and practical, enables practitioners to better contribute to patient care pathways, enhance interdisciplinary team communication and collaboration, and allows practitioners to understand the responsibility they assume when they use AI models. Practitioners will additionally build positive professional relationships within the AI ecosystem, which enhance service delivery and ensure optimal patient care in a future where AI will have a definite role in diagnostics and patient management.

This textbook also offers insights into the ethical aspects of AI, implementation considerations and patient acceptability, and the importance of integration of AI in a precision medicine framework, where person-centeredness is paramount. Furthermore, it offers the perspectives and supportive statements of national and international organizations: EFRS (Europe), SCoR (UK), IIRRT (Ireland) , CAMRT (Canada) ASMIRT (Australia), RASE (UAE), ASRT (USA), SORSA, (South Africa), BIR (UK, multi-disciplinary), ISRRT (International), EUSoMII (European) and includes regional work and AI resources from all professional bodies.

Finally, the textbook discusses the changing role, responsibilities and competencies of radiographers in a future with AI. There is therefore the need to update academic healthcare curricula, research priorities and policy to reflect this change of practice and prepare the workforce for a digital future. There are currently no books that comprehensively cover this material from a radiography practitioner perspective.

This textbook is an easily accessible text for radiographers and radiography students, providing a coherent, logical and informative guide to current and future techniques and practice.

The editors would like to sincerely thank Dr Charlotte Beardmore, Professor Patrick Brennan, Edward Chan, Samar ElFarra, Dr Kori Stewart, all renowned world leaders on radiography research, education, policy and practice for their kind foreword to support the mission and vision behind this textbook.
