Dewey a porté cette notion d'enquête le plus loin : à ses yeux, il n'y a pas de différence essentielle entre les questions que posent les choix éthiques, moraux ou esthétiques et celles qui ont une signification et une portée plus directement cognitives. Aussi aborde-t-il les questions morales et esthétiques dans un esprit d'expérimentation - ce qui tranche considérablement avec la manière dont la philosophie les aborde d'ordinaire, privilégiant soit la subjectivité et la vie morale, soit les conditions sociales et institutionnelles. Dans L'art comme expérience, la préoccupation de Dewey est l'éducation de l'homme ordinaire. Il développe une vision de l'art en société démocratique, qui libère quiconque des mythes intimidants qui font obstacles à l'expérience artistique.
