Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Hamburger Kaufmanns Arnold Amsinck (1579-1656), der auf der Insel Alt-Nordstrand einen Koog mit fruchtbarem Marschland eindeichen will, wozu ihm Herzog Friedrich III. umfassende Vorrechte gewährt. Sein Vorhaben, zunächst von Erfolg und reichen Erträgen gekrönt, aber macht die große "Mandränke" von 1634 zunichte. Amsinck gibt nicht auf, verliert jedoch schließlich fast sein gesamtes Vermögen und stirbt vereinsamt auf seiner Hallig. In Erinnerung an seine Herkunft wird diese noch heute Hamburger Hallig genannt.§Der Husumer Schriftsteller Albert Petersen (1883-1943) entwirft in seinem Roman ein buntes Bild des dramatischen Geschehens und lässt Motive der nordfriesischen Geschichte und Kultur aufleben. Mit diesem Buch wird erstmals seit Jahrzehnten eines der erfolgreichsten Werke Petersens wieder zugänglich gemacht.
