Député à l'Assemblée législative, juré au tribunal révolutionnaire, puis mis en prison par Robespierrre, il a été comparé à Bonaparte sous le Directoire. L'homme est un paradoxe vivant : issu de la vieille noblesse et très riche, il s'engage sans retenue dans la Révolution française aux côtés des plus démunis. Sous le Directoire, il échafaude avec Babeuf la conspiration des Égaux, puis théorise le concept - banal aujourd'hui, mais extrêmement neuf à l'époque - de ¿démocratie représentative¿, dont il est le père inconnu. Opposant à la dictature de Bonaparte, il se retire à Arles après 1800 pour y devenir le bienfaiteur de sa ville et de son quartier.
