The De Luna family, Moriscos of southern Spain, suffer through the Spanish monarchy's campaign of ethnic cleansing. Posing as Christians in Andalusia at the outbreak of the War of the Alpujarras in 1569, they undergo the harsh mandates against Moorish customs, the Islamic religion, and use of the Arabic language. After the defeat of the the Moors' rebellion, the family is expelled from Granada and displaced to work on an aristocratic estate in central Spain. The Inquisition is in full swing to establish Catholic orthodoxy. The art of dissimulation enables them over the course of decades to persevere in a dominant Christian culture.
