Der aus deutsch-baltischem Adel stammende Eduard von Keyserling (1855-1918) begann als Naturalist, wandte sich dann aber dem literarischen Impressionismus zu. Thema seiner psychologisch-feinfühligen Romane und Novellen ist die zum Untergang verurteilte Welt des deutschen Adels, zumeist im Baltikum, den er in einem wehmütigen und resignativen Tonfall schildert, der jedoch immer wieder durch Ironie und Distanz gebrochen wird. Die vorliegende Novelle "Am Südhang" veröffentlichte Keyserling 1914 am Vorabend des 1. Weltkriegs, der das von Keyserling vorausgeahnte endgültige Verschwinden der Adelswelt besiegeln sollte.
