Neben existenziellen Fragen, waren es vor allem Versuchungen unterschiedlichster Art, denen es zu widerstehen galt. Der griechische Asket Evagrios Pontikos identifizierte dabei "Akedia", den Dämon des Überdrusses und der Trägheit als größte der Verführungen. Pontikos' Lehre vom Umgang mit den Versuchungen sind bis heute aktuell. Evagrios Pontikos (ca. 345 - 399 n.Chr.) war überzeugt, dass er nur an einem so unwirtlichen Ort, wie der Wüste Ägyptens, Gott ganz erfahren würde. In der Einöde sammelte er spirituelle, psychologische und praktische Erfahrungen. Damit gehört er zu den Wüstenvätern, die den Grundstein für das spätere Mönchtum in der christlichen Welt legten.
