这是一部罕见的由抗战军人亲笔撰写、发自前线的战地报道集。作者吴鸢，1927年投身北伐，1934年起追随王耀武将军，加入后来被称为"国民革命军五大主力"之一的第74军，经历了从抗战第一战--淞沪会战到最后一战--湘西会战的全过程。战火纷飞之中，吴鸢将军（吴鸢的最后军职是第四方面军司令部第一处少将处长）还担任了范长江等创办的国际新闻社的特约记者，以及《民国日报》、《前线周报》等众多报刊的特约记者，写下和发表了众多战地报道，为抗战史留下极为珍贵的第一手资料。
吴鸢将军在抗战前和抗战期间撰写的少量散文、小说，以及后期撰写的回忆性文章，也收入本书。吴鸢担任江西省文史馆馆员期间，曾帮助多人记录、整理和撰写回忆录，本书附录中收入了少量此类文章。
本书由吴鸢的女儿吴仪东编辑、整理。由于历史的原因，吴鸢的文章散落于各地、多种报刊之中，且多篇字迹模糊不清，为搜集整理工作带来巨大的困难。在众多家人、朋友的帮助下，历时20余年，本书全稿终告完成。
