《花谢花开》以一个家族三代人60年时间跨度为背景，从两股政治势力争斗、家族实业兴衰、爱恨情仇几个视角生动地展现了社会剧烈变革如何深刻地影响到个人的命运。揭示了政治斗争的残酷无情，人性的美与丑，善与恶的两面性。实践证明社会发展应当遵循它的自然、自发属性，所谓的崇高而伟大的事业不过是座海市蜃楼。奔理想而去，触摸到的却是愚昧与贫穷。
第一部《求索》。抗战爆发使局势更加复杂，两股政治力量逼得青年们不得不选边站。他们在狭小的空间和不多的机缘中寻找出路，探寻人生。或主动或盲目地选择注定他们截然不同的命运。有得益者，但更多是失意者。对于他们中的大多数，不幸才刚刚开始，更大的磨难还在后面。
第二部《磨难》。中共建政使中华大地成为乌托邦试验场。接踵而至的政治运动不断冲击知识分子的认知，荡涤着他们的灵魂。被臆造出来的、为实现人类崇高而伟大事业的各种手段粉墨登场，却一次次留下惨不忍睹的废墟。文革彻底颠覆传统，突破道德底线，更是把荒诞推到极致。一群饥肠辘辘的躯体却在声嘶力竭地叫喊"实现共产主义"。物极必反，社会正孕育着一股求变的力量。
第三部《回归》。改革开放成为社会共识，但注定是一段艰辛之旅。因为我们走的是一条"特色"道路。特色是移花接木，是罩在资本上的外套。经过艰辛"探索"，被摒弃的市场又回来了，资本成了香饽饽。企业家成为令人羡慕的"劳模"。社会在付出巨大代价后又回到原点。
