2020年3月，由于新冠病毒流行，美国几乎全部的中文课都转为紧急网上授课。紧急网上授课改变了很多中文的教法，其中之一是教师怎么处理写汉字的问题。作者进行了一项网上调查，看紧急网课对中文教学有什么影响，特别是怎么教授汉字。调查发现大部分的中文教师在改为紧急网课后采用电写汉字教学。原因有多种，但主要原因是老师注意到了使用电脑的好处。调查的结论是紧急网课促进了"电脑中文"的学习方法。这个方法主要是找到解决中文作为外语学习的学生学习手写汉字造成的问题和困惑，使电脑辅助语言教学（CALL）得以在中文教学中运用。
