Dances and Canons stellt sowohl für die Komponistin Kate Moore wie für die Pianistin Saskia Lankhoorn ihr ECM-Debüt dar. Moore ist 1979 in England geboren und lebt heute in den Niederlanden (wo sie bei Louis Andriessen studierte). Jedoch hat Australien, wo sie aufwuchs, den stärksten Einfluss auf ihre schöpferische Phantasie ausgeübt, seine natürlichen Klangwelten haben sich in ihrer Musik in hypnotisch-strömende Puls-Muster und sich verlagernde Klangschichten verwandelt. In der holländischen Pianistin Lankhoorn (ebenfalls 1979 geboren) hat Moore eine engagierte und kongeniale Interpretin gefunden. "Man kann diese Musik unmöglich hören, ohne sich Gedanken über die enormen technischen Anforderungen zu machen, die sie an den Interpreten stellt", schreibt George Miller im Beiheft. Moore und Lankhoorn arbeiten seit 2003 regelmäßig zusammen. Das Programm des Albums enthält Kompositionen für Soloklavier, aber auch für zwei, vier und mehr Klaviere. Sie wurden im Auditorio svizzera in Lugano aufgenommen und von Manfred Eicher produziert.
